Glumes 3–3.5 mm long, acute, greenish to pale brown; sides 2–3 nerved; margin hyaline. Umbel 4–7-radiate, simple or semicompound, rays up to 10 cm long. Spikes ovate, 1.5–2.5 cm long. Nut dark reddish-brown. Culms acutely 3-angular. Perennial with a short woody rhizome the apex of which is enclosed in sheaths which persist on the young culm up to 20 cm above the base.
