Spikelets with 3 flowers; an apparently terminal bisexual one with a fertile and a male flower below it Basal sterile glumes more than 10; the lowest ones less than half as long as the spikelet Nut 4–5 mm long, obtuse or truncate, usually bright reddish-brown. Glumes acute to acuminate, black or dark brown; upper ones obtuse. Spikelets 7–8 mm long. Culms up to 2 m high. Leaves usually as long as the culms, c. 1 cm wide. Coast and adjacent plateaus.
