Tufted perennials up to 2 m high. Culms terete. Leaves long, linear, terete or inrolled, usually very scabrous. Inflorescence paniculate, each branch subtended by a ± leafy bract. Glumes dark brown to black, spirally imbricate; at least the lowest 4 empty. Perianth absent. Stamens 3–6, Style 3-fid or more. Nut ovoid-fusiform to globular, obtusely 3-angular to terete.
