Spikelets ± digitate or fasciculate in clusters on a very reduced rhachis, sometimes very few in number or solitary and then sometimes appearing lateral when the lowest involucral bract is erect. Rhachilla winged or not
Spikelet usually falling away as unit at maturity leaving the two empty glumes and a knob or protuberance on the rhachis; glumes usually persistent. Spikelets in globular to hemispherical clusters.
