Spikelets 1-4 flowered. Rhachilla articulate above the 2 lowest sterile glumes, spikelet falling away as a unit at maturity leaving a knob or protuberance on the rhachis. Inflorescence a dense globular to ovoid or cylindrical capitate spike
Perennials with creeping rhizomes
Glumes purplish-brown. 2–4 flowers per spikelet. Stamens 3. Inflorescence obovate, with several densely clustered heads of spikes, purple to black in colour. Culms triangular, involucral bracts 3- 5 up to 24 cm long, often reflexed. Spikelets 3–5 mm long. Glumes with smooth or toothed midrib, sides with several nerves. Nut about half as long as glumes.
