Two of the stamens long and exserted. Panicle loose. Corolla red changing to purple-blue, 20–30 mm long. Leaves sparingly scabrous; basal leaves ovate, up to 30 cm long, with prominent lateral veins; cauline leaves up to 9 cm long, oblong to lanceolate, cordate at the base. Coarse annual up to 1.5 m high. Widespread. Weed of cultivation, pastures and waste places. Introd. from the Mediterranean. Fl. winter– summer. Paterson’s Curse or Salvation Jane Echium plantagineum
