Shrubs. Leaves alternate, gland-dotted, aromatic, entire; without stipules. Flowers, regular, unisexual or polygamous, greenish white to white, apparently in terminal umbels. Sepals 2–3, connate into a cap which encloses bud. Petals usually 2. Stamens indefinite in number, with thick filaments. Carpels 1–5, free, with decurrent stigmas; placentas lateral or marginal. Fruit a berry.
