At least the lowermost leaves opposite and obovate or oblanceolate, becoming alternate and linear up the stem, 5–70 mm long, usually hirsute, margins typically undulate. Sepals 3–16 mm long. Corolla tube 4–11 mm long; lobes 6–20 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid to globular, 3–10 mm long, glabrous or hirsute. Tufted perennial up to 90 cm high, with few stems from the base and few branches. Widespread. Open forests and grasslands, occasionally in heath. Fl. most of the year
