Tufted perennial herb. Culms terete, striate, c. 30 cm high. Leaves basal, sometimes with very small laminas. Spikelets solitary or 2–3 in a terminal cluster, brown, each with an uppermost perfect flower and lower 1 or 2 male or sterile. Glumes spirally imbricate; 2–3 lowest ones empty and a small empty one above the flowers. Perianth bristles up to 6. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid. Nut ovoid. Widespread. Sandy soils.
