Nearly glabrous shrubs up to 4 m high. Leaves alternate. Flowers pedicellate in pairs, arranged in large terminal pseudo-heads with an involucre of coloured bracts. Perianth red, slit on the lower side when in bud; segments rolled back on one side. Hypogynous gland a short oblique almost complete ring. Anthers sessile. Ovary stipitate, glabrous. Style protruding from the perianth slit until released; pollen presenter expanded obliquely around the stigma. Fruit a coriaceous to woody follicle, recurved. Seeds several, in 2 rows, winged.
