Trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, coriaceous; stipules absent. Flowers sessile or shortly pedicellate, often numerous, in axillary spikes racemes or panicles. Calyx lobes 5, short, broad. Corolla tubular, deeply 5-lobed or the petals almost free, regular; lobes imbricate in the bud. Stamens numerous. Ovary inferior, 2-locular; placentas axile. Fruit drupaceous.
