Erect shrubs 30–100 cm high, glabrous or nearly so. Leaves alternate or opposite, divided into 3–9 or more narrow segments. Flowers small, in narrow spikes, 2–5 cm long, terminal or in the upper axils. Perianth pale yellow, 4–5 mm long; segments nearly equal, spreading. Anthers coherent in young flower, separating explosively. Style filiform, slightly bent, slightly longer than the stamens; pollen presenter absent. Fruit an oblong glabrous achene c. 2 mm long, usually with a single seed.
