Perennial herbs, usually glabrous. Leaves alternate, entire; stipules absent or minute and caducous. Flowers bisexual, regular, in terminal spikes or racemes, with a small bract and 2 bracteoles at the base of each. Calyx tubular, 5-lobed, small. Petals connate or cohering (except at the base) into a tubular corolla with 5 spreading lobes. Stamens 5, perigynous. Ovary 3–5-locular, superior; placentas axile. Fruit a schizocarp.
