Erect or small and diffuse shrubs. Leaves with a sheathing often membranous base concealing the branches, very concave, often stem-clasping above the base (Fig. 30). Sheathing leaf-bases falling off leaving the stem smooth and without scars. Flowers terminal, solitary or grouped towards the ends of the branches resembling a terminal panicle. Corolla tube short, pink or white, sometimes almost completely divided into separate petals; the lobes very spreading. Anthers connivent or cohering around the style. Ovary 5-locular. Fruit a capsule.
