Stems glabrous above sparsely and minutely hairy below middle. Leaves lanceolate to narrow-elliptic, mostly 5–20 cm long and 10–30 mm wide, regularly and finely toothed, distinctly auriculate and stem-clasping at the base; upper surface glabrous or finely scabrous, lower surface green, glabrous or with matted wispy hairs. Heads numerous, in terminal corymbs. Involucre 1–1.5 mm diam.; bracts 7–10 Florets 12–25. Fruiting heads 1.5–2 mm diam., involucre bracts reflexed. Cypselas 1.5–2 mm long, ± lustrous. Pappus 5–6 mm long. Erect, herb up to 1.5 m high. Widespread. Moist places, Fl. summer–autumn
