Surfaces of leaves glabrous (some marginal hairs may be present). Leaves oblanceolate to linear, 10–18 cm long, 15–25 mm wide, coarsely dentate, sometimes irregularly toothed, often auriculate at the base. Heads numerous (50–200) in terminal corymbs. Involucre 1–1.5 mm diam.; bracts 8–10. Florets 12–25. Fruiting head 2.5 mm diam., involucre bracts erect. Cypsela 2–2.5 mm long. Pappus 4–5 mm long. Erect herb up to 1 m high. Widespread. Moist places. Fl. summer–autumn
