Spikelets with 2 florets, sessile, appressed against the rhachis, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes linear, subulate. Lemmas 1 cm long, with a terminal awn as long or up to 3 times as long as the lemma. Inflorescence a dense narrow cylindrical spike 10–15 cm long, 15 mm wide (excluding the awns). Annual 1–2 m high. Coast and Cumberland Plain. Cultivated and escaped into pastures and waste places. Introd. from Europe. Fl. summer. Rye
