Perennial herbs with creeping rootstocks and ascending stems. Leaves petiolate. Flowers solitary in the axil of each floral leaf, all turned to one side of the rhachis. Calyx 2-lipped; both lips entire; upper lip with a hollow scale-like protuberance on the back. Corolla blue, with a rather long tube and small nearly closed lips; upper lip concave, emarginate; lower lip convex, spreading, 3-lobed. Stamens 4, in pairs, enclosed in the upper lip.
