Herbaceous perennials, rarely annuals, usually erect. Usually with taproot and basal rosette of leaves. Flowers small, on jointed pedicels in whorl-like clusters and arranged in long racemes or panicles. Perianth segments green or reddish, 6; the 3 inner (valves) enlarging and then enclosing the fruit. Stamens 6. Styles 3-fid, stigmas fringed. Nut triquetrous. All weeds of waste ground, pastures and gardens.
