Trailing climbing or sometimes erect, prickly shrubs. Canes usually do not bear flowers in the first year, these are referred to as primocanes. Leaves compound or simple. Flowers mostly in terminal or axillary racemes or panicles. Sepals 5, persistent. Petals 5, obovate. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous, superior. Fruits: drupels clustered on the dry or spongy conical or oblong receptacle into an aggregate fruit.
