Perennial herb. Leaves flat or concave, narrow, 3-angular. Culms slender, c. 30 cm high. Spikelets clustered in loose corymbs, with 1–2 perfect flowers and 1–3 male flowers above them. Glumes spirally imbricate; 3–4 lowest ones sterile. Perianth bristles 6–7, longer than the nut. Stamens 1–3. Style 2-fid, with a dilated persistent base. Nut globular, wrinkled.
