Erect, rigid, perennial herb. Culms compressed, up to 40 cm high. Leaf lamina concave or channelled, up to 30 cm long, often less than 1 mm wide. Spikelets numerous, 8–10 mm long or longer, in solitary compact terminal clusters. Involucral bracts with black to brown sheaths hyalo-membranous at the margins, the enlarged sheaths as long as the spikelets. Glumes obscurely distichous, lanceolate, with hyaline margins; 4–5 lowest ones empty. Perianth bristles 3, ciliate below. Stamens 3. Style 3-fid. Nut ovoid, obtusely trigonous. Widespread.
