Small, monoecious, heath-like shrubs. Leaves mostly spirally arranged, small, coriaceous, with thick margins; midvein prominent underneath; stipules present. Flowers in the axils of the upper leaves; males often clustered and on short peduncles; females solitary. Perianth segments 6, often larger in male than female flowers. Male flowers with 6 free stamens, and rudimentary ovary. Female flowers with a 3-locular 3-lobed ovary. Fruit 1-locular with 1 seed.
