Herbs, usually fleshy, sometimes woody at the base. Leaves opposite or alternate, entire, thick; stipules, when present, scarious or split into hairs. Flowers bisexual, regular. Sepals 2. Petals 4–5, imbricate. Stamens 3–many. Ovary superior or half inferior, 1-locular, with basal or free central placentas; styles 3–6, free or basally connate. Fruit a capsule. c. 20 gen., warm temp., mostly America.
