Perennial or annual herbs. Leaves basal and cauline, alternate, entire. Heads terminal solitary or few together. Involucre ovoid to hemispherical; bracts unequal, in several rows, with hyaline non-radiating laminas. Outer florets female, ligulate or tubular, with 2–4 lobes or teeth. Disc florets tubular, 5-toothed. Cypselas usually terete. Pappus of barbellate or capillary bristles, often united at the base.
