Plants tufted, not normally developing rhizomes which initiate shoots remote from the parent tussock. Panicle often widely spreading; branches devoid of spikelets in the lower part. Coarse tufted green-glaucous or greyish perennial, up to 120 cm high. Leaf blades flat, up to 80 cm long, up to 3.5 mm wide, inrolled, scabrous below; ligule 0.5 mm long, minutely ciliolate at the apex. Panicle 10–25 cm long; lowest branches up to 12 cm long, devoid of spikelets for c. half their length. Spikelets with 3–4 florets (rarely up to 8), greenish to purplish, strongly compressed. Widespread. Open forests and grasslands. Fl. summer
