Shrub or tree to 12 m high. Young shoots and leaves maroon. Leaves oblong to elliptic, 8–14 cm long, 2–7 cm wide, margins with spiny teeth, upper surface dark green, lower surface yellow-green. Stipules with glandular margins. Inflorescence a terminal corym. Flowers white, 8 mm diam. Sepals triangular. Fruit globose to obovoid, 5–6 mm diam red. Cultivated, rarely naturalized.
