Tall, erect tree with thick trunk to 1 m or more diam. Leaves up to 6 m long, pinnate with stiff pinnae which become spine-like towards base of leaf. Petioles short, bases remaining as stubs on trunk. Flowers bisexual, yellowish, sessile in axil of bracts. Fruit an elliptic berry, 15–20 mm long, yellow to red. Garden escape near habitation.
