Stipular sheaths pubescent on the outside; margin entire; all except the upper ones developing dilated, green collar like limbs; margins ciliate. Petiole more than 10 mm long. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, up to 13 cm long, softly pubescent especially underneath.. Perianth deep red to crimson. Spikes drooping, arranged in a terminal panicle. Erect, annual herb 1–2 m high.
