Erect, rhizomatous herbs sometimes with woody aerial stems. Leaves linear, distichous. Flowers regular, in a terminal cluster (cymes) enclosed by two large striate spathes. Outer perianth segments connate into a filiform tube with 3 broad spreading lobes; inner segments smaller, erect. Filaments connate below. Stylar branches entire, dilated. Capsule narrow, 3-angular.
