Shrub up to 1 m high, glandular pubescent, slightly clammy. Lower leaves elliptic to oblanceolate, 5–8 cm long, coarsely toothed. Heads solitary or in few-flowered corymbs. Involucre 15–20 mm diam.; bracts in 1–several rows, up to 15 mm long. Ray florets female, up to 20, in 1 row; rays white, purplish underneath. 15–30 mm long. Disc florets blue, cypselas aborting. Cypselas c. 7 mm long, with acute narrow wings. Garden escape near habitation. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. spring–summer
