Small herbs 1–13 cm high with 1–5 sterile leaves. Rootstock slightly tuberous with fleshy roots. Sterile lamina light green, rather fleshy, very narrowly elliptic to broadly elliptic or lanceolate to ovate, entire, 7–45 mm long, 2–9 mm broad; the apex acute or obtuse; the veins anastomosing, with free vein-endings in some of the areolae. Spike 5–15 mm long, 1.5–2 mm broad, borne on an elongated peduncle. Widespread. Open grassland, freshwater swamps or in peaty soil on heathland. Austral Adder's Tongue
