Perennial herbs, ± decumbent erect or diffuse, sometimes ± woody, often with a very foetid odour when fresh. Leaves with sheathing stipules. Flowers very small, united by their calyces into a globular compound or rarely a simple head. Corolla tube short, 3–5-lobed. Anthers exserted on long filaments. Ovary 1 or 2-locular. Fruit a compound capsule opening by a lid.
