Hairs on the stem below the inflorescence with swollen red bases. Leaves narrow-ovate to narrow-elliptic, up to 30 cm long at the base of the stem, pubescent. Flowers 5–7 cm diam. Capsule narrow-ovoid, 20–25 mm long, c. 8 mm diam., angular. Seeds angular. Erect herb up to 60 cm high. Mostly coast. On sandy soils. Introd. from America. Fl. summer–autumn
