Much branched, stiff herbs. Leaves opposite. Perianth segments 4, green, rigid, very spreading or reflexed after flowering. Flowers in sessile head-like spikes or clusters in the upper forks of the branching system. Bracts and bracteoles spinescent, very spreading. Stamens 2 or 4, united at the base. Fruit membranous, 1-seeded, enclosed in the persistent perianth.
