Leaves mostly ovate, cordate to obtuse or tapering abruptly at the base into a short petiole, 3–12 cm long, crenulate; veins progressively smaller with each division; the primary veins not curving towards the apex. Inflorescences usually inserted above the axils. Fruit purple-black, c. 1.5 mm diam. Glabrous or pubescent shrub or small tree up to 8 m high, with flaky greyish bark. Widespread.
