Erect, glabrous herb mostly 30–100 cm high. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, irregularly toothed or sinuate, 4–20 cm long. Flowers axillary. Corolla pale blue, c. 20 mm long. Ovary 4–5-locular. Fruit a rather dry berry enclosed in 5 enlarged cordate sepals. Widespread. Weed of cultivation and waste places. Introd. from S. America. Fl. summer. Apple of Peru
