Shrubs to small trees, often resinous on the surface. Leaves usually alternate, simple, usually sessile; stipules absent. Flowers irregular, usually bisexual. Sepals usually 5, connate. Corolla tubular, usually 5-lobed, usually 2-lipped. Stamens 4 (rarely 5), epipetalous. Ovary superior, 2-locular, with up to 4 ovules per loculus. Fruit usually drupaceous. 5 gen., trop. to warm temp.
