Spikelets with 3–20 florets, placed edgeways to the rhachis, sessile or almost so, distichous in alternate notches on the angular rhachis, oblong fusiform-elliptic or cuneate in outline, less than 2 cm long (excluding the awns), appressed to the rhachis, so that the lemmas touch the rhachis. Glume 1 except in the terminal spikelet which has 2 glumes. Lemmas rounded on the back. Leaf blades flat; ligule short, membranous, truncate. Plants glabrous throughout.
