Shrub up to 2 m high with hollow stems. Leaves opposite, ovate to broad-ovate, up to 15 cm long and 8cm wide, acuminate, petiolate, minutely pubescent. Flowers in compact cymes with conspicuous often purplish bracts. Corolla c. 2 cm long, nearly equally 5-lobed, swollen at the base. Fruit a dark red berry.
