Ovary 8–12-locular. Capsule 7–8 mm diam., with a flat summit. Leaves obovate to narrow-elliptic, thick, 1–2 cm long, 5–7 mm wide, grey-green, obtuse or with a blunt mucro. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, 12–15 mm diam., with two pairs of large caducous bracteoles and several smaller ones. Tall shrub or small tree with hard bark. Sand dunes near the sea. Fl. spring.
