Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, entire. Heads pedunculate, usually hemispherical. Involucral bracts in several rows; the outer scarious and sometimes descending along the peduncle. Receptacle flat, without scales. Florets all tubular; the outer ones often female, 3–4-toothed. Disc florets bisexual, 5-toothed. Cypselas contracted at the top or beaked, 2–3 mm long. Pappus of several capillary bristles which are barbellate or almost plumose towards the ends.
