Culm margins smooth, cutting, becoming irregular with age. Leaves shorter than culms, 2.5–4 mm wide. Panicle 5–12 cm long. Glumes 5 or 6, red-brown with blackish apex; glabrous or minutely pubescent. Nut grey to red-brown, shining. Rhizomes short and firmly rooted. Mostly in Blue Mts extending to coast. Sandy soils
