Biennial or perennial herb. Leaves basal, oblong, slightly and distantly lobed or sinuate-pinnatifid, often with triangular lobes. Heads solitary, on leafless solid scapes 10–20 cm long. Involucre glabrous or bristly; bracts c. 12, equal, herbaceous, with smaller bracts at the base. Florets numerous, all ligulate, exceeding the involucre; rays yellow, 3–7 mm long. Cypselas striate, wrinkled transversely; outer ones thick, curved, with a short pappus of small ± united scales; inner ones tapering at the summit, with a pappus of long plumose bristles and an outer row of barbellate bristles. Widespread. Weed of cultivation, pastures and waste places. Introd. from Europe. Fl. most of the year. Lesser Hawkbit
