Tree up to 15 m high covered with scurfy scales. Leaves ovate to broad-lanceolate, C.10 cm long, 6 cm wide; margins entire;; petiole up to 2 cm long. Flowers solitary in leaf axil. Epicalyx 6 mm long, falling early. Calyx 10–25 mm long. Petals pink to mauve. Fruit a spiny capsule C. 3 cm long. Seeds red and fleshy. Garden escape. Widely cultivated and occasionally naturalized in coastal areas. Norfolk Island Hibiscus
