Erect herb, roots rhizomatous. Leaves basal 3, 40–90 cm long, 5–25 mm wide. Inflorescence up to 1 m high, with >50 spreading to pendulous flowers in a dense raceme. Perianth green to orange-red, 3–4 cm long, lobes 2–3 mm long. Stamens 6, free, anthers yellow becoming black. Ovary superior, style filiform, stigma capitate. Capsule 7–14 mm long, seeds numerous. Garden escape. Introd. from Africa. Fl. all year
