Herbaceous perennials sometimes flowering in the first year, 15–50 cm high (sometimes higher when growing amongst shrubs), with slender rather wiry stems. Leaves alternate or alternate and opposite; stipules present. Petals blue or orange; lowest petal much longer than the others, slightly pouched at the base. Fruit a capsule opening in 3 valves.
