Procumbent or erect annual; stems up to 30 cm long. Basal leaves in a rosette, up to 15 cm long, ± spathulate, mostly lobed. Cauline leaves alternate, stem-clasping, toothed or entire, up to 5 cm long. Heads solitary on leafless peduncles which are hollow and swollen towards the summit. Involucre 7–9 mm long; bracts c. 12, in 1 row, with a few smaller ones at the base. Florets all ligulate, yellow. Cypselas terete, 6–10 mm long, curved, ribbed longitudinally. Pappus of 4–5 scales, c. 3 mm long, forming a crown, sometimes double on the inner cypselas. Widespread. Weed of cultivation, pastures and waste places. Introd. from the Mediterranean.
