Monoecious herbs, often scabrous. Leaves opposite or alternate, the upper ones gradually reduced to bracts. Flowers greenish or brownish, on short pedicels in a terminal raceme or panicle. Calyx lobes usually 4, persistent, short. Petals usually 4, small or often absent. Stamens usually 8. Ovary 4- (rarely 2-) locular. Fruit indehiscent.
