Spikelets with 1 floret, sessile, distichous, half embedded in the rhachis. Glume 1 (2 in the terminal spikelet), c. 7 mm long. Lemma shorter than the glume, awnless, hyaline, with its back to the rhachis. Palea hyaline. Inflorescence a cylindrical spike c. 2 mm diam., up to 20 cm long, straight or slightly curved, fragmenting at maturity below each spikelet. Plant up to 50 cm high. Leaf blades flat or inrolled, 5–10 cm long; ligule short, truncate. Introd. from the Mediterranean. Fl. summer. Common Barb Grass
